Howrah youth beaten with iron rod for Rs 300 debt, dies in SSKM hospital

A simple bike repair spiraling into senseless savagery—a 300-rupees unpaid bill igniting a frenzy that kills a young man in Howrah district's Baganan. On Thursday evening, Sheikh Abdur Rahman who had just returned from Nepal where he was working, headed to a second garage to fix what he felt was a shoddy repair job from his first visit months earlier, unaware that the original shop owner, Motabbar Mallick, would spot the move and unleash a storm of rage. Flanked by three accomplices, Mallick cornered Rahman as he picked up his bike, demanding the 300 rupees debt from a 2,800-rupee bill which he has partially paid Rs 2500 back in June—only for words to turn to blows, and a wrenching argument to end with a iron rod crashing down on Rahman's skull.

Rushed first to Baganan Rural Hospital and then to Kolkata's SSKM Hospital for emergency surgery on Thursday, Rahman succumbed to death at SSKM hospital today midnight. As Bagnan police files a murder case and launch a manhunt for the four accused, this gut-wrenching tale spotlights the raw underbelly of grudges, where a mechanic's grudge can claim a youth's life. The chain of fury traces back five months, when Rahman dropped off his motorcycle at Mallick's shop for repairs, paid 2,500 rupees on the spot for Rs 2800 bill. Off to Nepal for work, he returned recently, bike still faltering, and chose another garage for the 2nd time repair.

At SSKM, doctors battled to mend the fractured skull, but infection and trauma proved too much, turning a routine debt chase into a family's eternal ache, As the probe gains steam, with police scouring CCTV scraps and grilling locals for leads on the accused's hideouts, Rahman's death ripples through Howrah's Bagnan like a caution— a stark reminder that in tight-knit neighborhoods, unpaid debts can twist into tragedies. No arrests yet, but the net tightens, promising accountability in a case that's less about rupees and more about the fragility of life when pride collides with poverty
